You will learn to read commercial patterns. By the end of the course you will be able to make simple seams, insert a zip fastener, use bias bindings and either make a simple garment or household items using curved machine stitching as well as straight lines. You will also learn to use the sewing machine attachments

About this course
Anyone who is interested in progressing their sewing skills to enable them to make a simple garment or a range of household items.
You should have completed a Get Started with Sewing course or have the ability to create simple sewn items such as cushion covers.

Practical lessons, demonstrations and one-to-one support from the tutor.

Progress will be monitored on a weekly basis with one-to-one discussion between the tutor and yourself.

What equipment or materials will I need to provide?
Some equipment and materials will need to be provided by you. You should be prepared to bring scissors, pins, needles, threads and a tape measure, plus fabric to make your chosen item(s). Sewing machines and irons are provided. Costs will vary according to the material chosen, so for further guidance on cost please contact the centre
What other support is available?
Help with numeracy or literacy is available. ICT drop-in sessions are available during term time and are open to all learners. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Learner Support Funding is available for equipment, childcare and travel to learners who qualify.
