The Institute of Counselling was founded in 1985 as a Christian based, not for profit independent educational body. It is committed to promoting pastoral care throughout the services it provides.

The Aims of the Institute of Counselling are:

(a) to promote the training and development of counselling skills, (b) to provide opportunities for continuing professional development, (c) to produce and distribute counselling skills training resources and (d) to provide a counselling service for individuals needing counselling.

The Institute provides a wide range of counselling and related courses. Students enrol with assurance and confidence on our quality courses, which are fully backed by the experience and resources of the Institute of Counselling.

In its early years the Institute offered only courses in Clinical and Pastoral Counselling, within a pastoral context. Since 1985, over 18,000 students from the UK and overseas have enrolled on these courses.

In recent years, has also produced a selection of further courses which follow the clinical person-centred approach developed by Carl Rogers and others.

The Institute is committed to providing counselling skills training to all who will benefit from the courses. On this basis a non-discriminatory policy is operated with regard to students' background, culture, ethnic origin, gender, age or creed.

Diploma in Cognitive Coaching and Mentoring

This new Diploma in Cognitive Coaching and Mentoring course is designed to be both relevant and practical. It combines the best of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Coaching and Mentoring to offer you a unique in-depth cognitive approach to helping others. This three-module course offers you the essential knowledge and skills of coaching and mentoring from a cognitive framework.

Upon successful completion of the three modules; CBT, Coaching and Mentoring; you will be awarded the Diploma in Cognitive Coaching and Mentoring.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy develops a series of strategies targeted at an individual’s non-productive thinking. In this first module, CBT is fully explained and lays the cognitive foundation for the whole Diploma course. CBT offers you insights that enable you to help clients to identify and break through hindering forces keeping them back from reaching their stated goal. You are introduced to the ABC model of CBT. This describes the interaction between the client’s behaviours, feelings and thoughts. You are also taught to identify non-productive thinking, challenge damaging core
beliefs and offer options or new perspectives that help your client to reach a positive outcome.

Coaching is rooted in developmental psychology and is commonly applied in organisational settings. Coaching is associated with team building, executive coaching, management coaching, life-skills coaching, career development and personal and professional development.
This second module develops what you have learned in the CBT module and applies cognitive techniques to the art of coaching. In the role of a coach, you will be able to help clients define aspirations, recognise patterned ways of relating, identify options, uncover rules and set new achievable goals that can help them grow and develop - and so become the person they want to be.

Mentoring is associated with positive personal and professional growth, career outcomes and development. This third module builds on what you have learned in Modules 1 and 2 and further develops your knowledge and skills to include the art of mentoring. You are now ready to learn the skills, techniques and in depth insights of mentoring. In the role of a mentor, you will contract and develop with your client a highly personal yet professional relationship that is creative, dynamic and intentional resulting in a positive outcome.
Mentoring enables the individual to develop a greater sense of fulfilment, role identification, internal authority and identity, that results in a greater level of competency and personal satisfaction.

This unique Diploma in Cognitive Coaching and Mentoring will take you step by step through the knowledge, skills and attitudes that you need to become an effective coach and/or mentor.

The Diploma in Cognitive Coaching and Mentoring is ideal for people who work with colleagues/clients in areas such as management, healthcare, teaching and caring professions. It is also suitable for students and H.R. or private practitioners and those already involved in coaching and mentoring.
