This course is designed to meet the needs of teachers in a substantial role in further and/or adult and community education, trainers in the public and private sector as well as those working with 14-19 year olds in vocational settings or in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Trainees on this programme come from a wide range of public and private teaching or training environments such as the Police Force, Emergency Services, local authority services, private companies and the National Health Service. Applicants from a registered charitable organisation who are teaching/training in a voluntary capacity will also be considered on an individual basis.

Course programme

  • Trainees must be working as teachers/trainers in a post-compulsory environment for a minimum of 40 hours in year 1 and 60 hours in year 2. We require a letter from your place of employment to verify this.
  • GCSE English and maths at A*-C or equivalent.
  • A qualification at level 3 or above in your area of expertise.
  • You will need to nominate a mentor from your setting/organisation – they should hold a recognised teaching/training qualification and have been in a teaching/training role for at least 3 years.
  • You must have (or will need to obtain) a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check issued within the last 3 years.
  • If you already hold a university Introductory Award or Certificate in Education and Training you may be able to join the Diploma course at a later stage. This will be discussed with you at interview. You will be required to present your original certificates at interview – photocopies are not accepted. You will also be asked to undertake a short, online initial assessment in English and maths.
