The course has a strong emphasis on the integration of theory and practice of teaching English. What you will learn

You will extend your specialist knowledge of teaching skills, building a greater understanding of the post-compulsory sector and the specialist needs of maths/numeracy learners.

Through the specialist modules you will enhance your knowledge of inclusive teaching strategies and methods, and the use of mathematics/numeracy and ICT resources.

The courses are delivered using a blended learning approach: this is a variety of methods such as lectures, on-line activities, seminars, group/individual tutorials, presentations and practical activities are used. There are opportunities for a fully online delivery too. Learning and teaching will be achieved through a combination of face-to-face and electronic based resources and communications. Individual support will be given in tutorials.

Teaching practice is assessed by six teaching observations and a portfolio of evidence.

What you will study

You will study three specialist ESOL and Literacy modules:

Literacy ESOL and the Learner (20 credits at HE5) which will be assessed by a case study of an individual learner and a report demonstrating planning for individual needs.

Literacy and ESOL Learning and Teaching (20 credits at HE5) which will explore and examine the principles and methods of effective teaching and embedding of English into other areas of the curriculum.

Literacy and ESOL Theories and Frameworks (20 credits at Level HE5) which will examine the links between theory and practice; critically analysing theoretical frameworks of English teaching and the methods and approaches used when delivering Literacy and ESOL in the classroom.
