Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector

Is this course right for me?

This 7305 Level 5 diploma is suitable for those aiming to achieve full qualified teacher learning and skills status to teach post-16 year old students.

What will I be learning?

The course is a part-time course delivered over two years.
Year One: preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector; planning and enabling learning; enabling learning and assessment; theories and principles of planning and enabling learning.
Year Two: continuing personal and professional development; curriculum development for inclusive practice; wider professional practice.
Optional units undertaken throughout the two years: completion of a teaching practice portfolio; completion of an individual learning plan.

How will I learn?

Classroom based activities which include direct teaching, group and individual presentations, research activities, micro-teaching, seminars, specialist delivery of certain topics.
You will be assessed by a variety of assignments, including essays, reports and presentations. You will also be assessed on your teaching practice through observations.

What else might I want to know?

This qualification enables you to develop generic skills in teaching post-16 year old students. Equal emphasis is placed on your teaching practice, the theory underpinning this practice and your own professional development. The programme includes optional units that extend your professional competence in your teaching area.
All trainees will need a subject specific mentor who can support them throughout the course. This should be a qualified teacher who will also have a Level 3, or above, qualification in the relevant subject area. Ideally this will be a person who works closely with the trainee in the work place.
Mentors will be offered training at South Devon College and will be given guidance on how to carry out their role.

What can I do afterwards?

You can progress on to a further appropriate professional qualification.
