In this three-day course you'll learn how to direct and tell stories using 360 degree documentaries.
It's aimed at filmmakers who are interested in entering a more immersive space with their work and will help you look at stories through a 360 lens.
The course is led by award-winning immersive documentary filmmaker Jayisha Patel. Jayisha will share personal insights on the 360 process and how to transition from a traditional art form to one that's more immersive.
You'll also be able to use the media lab and editing software at UCL after the course has finished.

Course programme

The course will be taught through a series of lectures and workshops that increase in complexity over the course of the weekend.

Session 1 - A hands-on viewing workshop. You'll view critically acclaimed 360 documentaries to familiarise yourself with the language of 360.

Session 2 - Storytelling in 360. In this lecture and integrated workshop, you'll learn how to view the world through a 360 lens, focusing on what works and what doesn't. The lecture will focus on the principals of 360 storytelling, what's different compared to traditional filmmaking and how to source a story which works for this medium.

Session 3 - Storytelling structure for 360. In this session you'll learn how to structure your narratives based on 360 character-led case studies.

Session 4 - Cinematography in 360. In this session you'll learn about 360 camera composition and where to best position the camera in a 360 environment to help your particular story.

Session 5 - Directing in 360. In this session you'll learn how to direct in 360. This includes looking at different approaches to form within 360 and how to find your authorial voice within the medium.
