This course is suitable for those interested in wood occupations and provides the opportunity to learn new hand tool skills and develop knowledge of constructing basic woodworking joints. The programme covers a wide range of skills relating to furniture manufacture, both traditional and modern. By the end of the 10 week programme learners will make their own ‘shaker style’ side table to take home with them. There are no exams required and a Colchester Institute certificate will be awarded at the end of the course.

- Selection, use and maintenance of wood working hand tools
- Wood work joints: halving, mortise and tenon and dovetail
- Make a dovetailed box in softwood
- Introduction to wood work machines (mortise and band saw)
- Make a ‘shaker style’ side table in hardwood
