You will learn routine maintenance and how to deal with emergency DIY tasks. In particular you will be shown how to use tools safely reducing the risk of injury. There is a short session on risk assessment on how to avoid accidents. Some 100000 weekend DIYers end up in hospital every year through lack of knowledge in the us of tools and working in a property maintenance environment. Suitable for: This a course designed for the absolute beginner. This is an ideal course for busy women who would like to learn a few home maintenance skills in a friendly atmosphere.
About this course
There are no requirements. Students who have never seen a DIY tool are very welcome and will be shown the basics of how to use tools safely and competently

DIY for Home Maintenance
Home owners have requested a tailor made course just for them, to fulfil the need to carry out routine maintenance and how to deal with emergency DIY tasks.
The course will be run over a two day weekend from 9.00am to 4.00pm, Saturday and Sunday.
During the course you will be taught the following, with lots of hands on use of tools and materials:-
DAY 1
- Health & Safety.
- Introduction to tools, their use and how to use them correctly.
- Plumbing – The water system, taps, valves, tanks, cisterns, waste drains. How and where to turn off water, repair that dripping tap, stop a leaking radiator, clear the blocked toilet and more.
- Tiling – Introduction to Tiling, use of tiles, types of tiles, adhesives, grouts and trim. How to replace a broken tile, drill a tile, clean tiles and grout and apply sanitary silicon.
DAY 2
- Carpentry – Introduction to the safe use of tools – saws, chisels, drills, hammers, screwdrivers – with lots of practise.
- Electrics – Changing a 3 pin plug, 3 pin plug fuse, light bulbs – safety with electrics. What you can and cannot do under the current legislation.
- Decorating – Preparation, estimating wall paper required, hanging wall paper, painting doors, skirting boards and architraves.
