  • Man with a Movie Camera (Vertov, Russia, 1929) Dziga Vertov's experimental ode to a day of the life of the city is still visually exciting and powerful 80 years on , with it's rhythmic editing, creative cinematography and frank , critical and celebratory depiction of urban life.

    Rome, Open City (Rossellini, Italy,1945) Iconic film considered to herald Italian Neorealism, featuring the magnificent Anna Magnani and Aldo Fabrizi, and filmed in Rome under extreme conditions.

    American Splendor (Springer & Berman, USA 2003) A funny, creative and original biography about Harvey Pekar, the author of theAmerican Splendor
    comic book series, starring Paul Giammati and also featuring the 'real' Harvey Pekar. The film review site Rotten Tomatoes' consensus is "Exhilarating, both stylistically and for its entertaining, moving portrayal of an everyman".

    Man on Wire (James Marsh, 2008) Uplifting, stylish documentary about French tightrope walker Philippe Petit , and in a way, about courage and freedom

    Beaches of Agnes (Agnes Varda, France 2008) Moving and creative, 80 year old film maker Agnes Varda's autobiographical personal journey is beautiful, wacky & intelligent.
