Drama

Introduction

The Drama Department approaches performance in a broad sense, in diverse manifestations through various media. Drama at Bristol is distinctive for the way in which we combine the study of theatre, film and television, exploring the common elements of these forms and recognising their different qualities. We stress the interrelation of theory, analysis and practice. Practical classes and production workshops provide students with relevant technical and craft skills that serve as the basis for creative exploration and critical analysis through performance and screen practices. Theatre workshops and screenworks are studied in light of their historical background and the social, cultural and political conditions of production and reception.

Teaching and Learning

Units are taught through lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. Students are able to present their practical work to their peer groups and to the wider public. Seminar and workshop class sizes are normally no large than 18, and lecture groups normally comprise 20 - 50 students. Technical instruction and personal tutorial supervision are provided where appropriate.

Assessment
Admission to the second year is dependent on the satisfactory completion of required coursework in the first year. Final examination is based on continuous assessment throughout the two final years across a variety of modes of coursework. This includes essays, seminar presentations and practical projects.
