Drama & Theatre Studies GCE A Level

Course assessment:
As a member of the Drama Department, you will undergo assessment on a weekly and termly basis through internal testing and homework and College wide assessments. Assessments will be both practical and theoretical.

What can this course offer me?
Results have been excellent over the past few years, with pass rates consistently at 100% and a high rate of A or B grades. You will work in a relaxed and open environment, where discussion and plain speaking are encouraged and where you will learn in a practical rather than theoretical way. We cater for a wide range of students - if acting is your 'thing' then we can accommodate you, but equal time and consideration is also given to all you set, costume, lighting and sound designers out there! A combination of practical work, set text study, practitioner exploration and theatre visits develops a broad base of theatrical knowledge and you will be able to specialise in a particular field of interest.
You will be taught by a highly qualified and experienced staff, all experts in their field and who will bring the best out of you!

What will I learn?
The AS Course:
You will gain a knowledge and understanding of theatre practical through your own engagement with the medium as both participant and informed audience member. You will develop both performance and production skills appropriate to the creation and realisation of drama and theatre.

Unit 1:
  • interpretation of two plays from a performance perspective, linked to the study of one practitioner
  • your personal response to live theatre seen during the course

Unit 2:
  • working as an individual or in a pair to develop and present and exteact from a published play
  • working a spart of a group to develop and present an extract from a play


The A2 Course
Unit 3:
  • working in a group to devise and perform an original piece of theatre

Unit 4:
  • interpretation of one set play from a director's perspective
  • application of a live production to a particular theatrical period

Is there anything else I need to know?
There are no specific entry requirements for the course, but a genuine, deep and long-lasting passion for drama and theatre, coupled with boundless energy and enthusiasm are necessities! The more you put in, the more you'll gain! It is possible to make a success of the course with no drama experience, although some awareness of practical and critical drama would be a distinct advantage.
