An introduction to and exploration of the practice of mindfulness and how it relates to drawing from observation. Through a variety of guided exercises, investigate ways of consciously cultivating awareness and identify how this can enrich the drawing process and lead to deepening concentration, clarity of perception, appreciation, sensitivity and aliveness in your drawings. This course is suitable for beginners as well as those with experience in drawing who would like to enhance their drawing practice.

About this course
• Identify and employ a range of methods for practicing mindfulness in drawing
• Engage in drawing from observation with greater spontaneity and confidence
• Demonstrate an ability to employ a range of drawing media
• Employ a toolkit of methods and approaches to stimulate, sustain or refresh your drawing.
The course fee includes most materials. Students are welcome to bring additional drawing materials and specialist papers if they wish. All basic drawing media and paper are provided. You may wish to buy a sketch book and drawing materials book to practice drawing tasks outside of the class. There is a suggested booklist but it is not essential to buy these for the course. The library keeps a comprehensive stock of art books and membership is free to enrolled students.
Through guided mindfulness practices and practical drawing tasks. One-to-one guidance is offered throughout the course. There will be opportunities for group discussion and sharing of individual drawing experiences.

Course programme
During the course we will explore a variety of ways to stimulate a fresh response to drawing from observation. There will be a series of guided drawing exercises exploring: the role of body awareness, sensitivity to materials, quality and clarity of perception, spontaneity, empathy, meaning and the imagination. We will work with a broad range of media and a variety of objects from observation which will serve as inspiration for expressing rhythm, texture, weight, tone and line directly and freely through drawing. One-to-one guidance is available throughout the course.
