About this course

- successfully use drawing as a preliminary step towards painting
- experience drawing as a means of decision-making and problem-solving in a painting
- understand possible affinities between drawn and painted marks
- use painting and drawing to explore and interpret your own work and or/ that of others.

A small notebook for making notes/sketches (no larger than A4) is advised, although not essential.

We will engage in a series of structured projects that explore the relationship between drawing and painting. There will be group discussions and evaluations, individual tutorials, and explorations of works by selected artists.

Course programme

We will explore strategies for relating drawing to painting, including: working from observation; exploring abstract mark, gesture and composition; making drawn studies as an aid to preparing for paintings; and also interpreting and developing your own painting and/or that of other artists.

You will be encouraged you to explore and reflect upon how drawing and painting can facilitate the development of a personal creative process.These preparatory studies will lead you to a final piece which can be either a drawing or painting.
