Course programme
Research Methodologies
This module explores a range of research strategies and methods, preparing you to assess the value and significance of different approaches to data collection and analysis within your field of study. You’ll learn how to develop your own research design, and how to collect and analyse information in order to find out new things about a topic that you’re interested in. Coursework typically involves developing your own research proposal.
Major Study
This module allows you to pursue your particular interests and demonstrate the breadth of knowledge, understanding and strengths that you have developed during your degree studies. You’ll be supported through the design and implementation of a small scale piece of educational research into your chosen topic. This module is your opportunity to bring together everything you have learned in a study of your choosing and you'll typically be assessed via a dissertation.
Option modules:
Choose two from a list which may include:
Support Learning in Young Children
You’ll be introduced to the principles of effective teaching for supporting children’s learning. You'll learn about the concept of inclusion, the principles of both medium and short term planning, and a variety of perspectives on planning and teaching. Assessment is typically via peer presentation and the development of a written, reflective report.
Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND): Understanding policy and practice
You will study historical attitudes to disability including, for example, medical intervention from the early part of the 20th century and more recent social changes including the disability rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s, and a range of models of health and disability. You will critically evaluate appropriate policy and legislation and how this has influenced the development of appropriate provision and practice. You will explore how our understanding of SEND has developed, and the impact of this on our understanding of inclusion. You will investigate the needs arising from specific SEND conditions, and what this means for educational practice. This module will also support you in developing some of the professional knowledge and understanding required within the NCTL National Award for SEN Co-ordination, related to the following standards: 1. The statutory and regulatory context for SEN and disability equality and the implications for practice in your school or work setting 2. How SEN and disabilities affect pupils’ participation and learning 3. Strategies for improving outcomes for pupils with SEN and/or disabilities
Health and Well Being
Through this module you’ll explore different aspects of the health and well-being of children and young people and become equipped to evaluate the wider public health agenda, national trends and supporting legislation. Assessment is typically via research, presentation, discussion and written evaluation.
Promoting Positive Behaviour in the Early Years
This module aims to explore the context of and responses to a range of behaviours in early years’ settings, to develop understanding of different techniques that can be used to promote positive behaviours for learning. You'll explore the early years’ phase-specific causes of challenging behaviour along with the way that emotional and other difficulties are played out in one-to-one, small group encounters and whole setting contexts. Specific behaviours associated with learning difficulties and disabilities will be identified and various strategies for inclusive practice analysed. You'll also consider theoretical aspects of behaviour management.
