Level: This is a level 2 course.

What is the Pre-Access course?
This course is designed to provide students who wish to progress to the Access to Higher Education course or any course which requires good study skills. It may also serve as a preparation for a career change.

It will provide a solid grounding in the skills needed for effective learning such as writing essays and reports, taking notes and speaking within groups. The course will also offer training in IT.

We ask all prospective students to complete an application form before enrolling, you will then be asked to attend an informal interview which will entail a short test.

NB An interview is required before you can enrol on this course .

Course topics
You will study topics designed to build confidence in study such as:
  • Study skills
  • It
  • Numeracy
  • Planning for progression to future careers/courses
Teaching and Learning
Teaching methods will encourage participation and group work to develop confidence and self esteem.

You will participate in discussion and work in groups on tasks set by your teachers. You will receive constructive feedback about how you work with others and your contribution in group situations.

You will be asked to do written tasks for some subjects and will be given help with this in study skill sessions.

Written work may involve doing research using the library or other sources of information such as the Internet. You will be helped with this in IT sessions.

You will be expected to produce some of your coursework using a word processing software package.

Assessment details
Assessment is by continuous coursework.

Progression
Students may want to progress to the Access to Higher Education course as a route to university entrance. Others decide to progress to a skills based vocational programme such as Accounting or using Information Technology.

This is a Learning & Skills Council (LSC) funded course and you may be exempt from the tuition fee, however you would be required to pay the registration fee at the time of application.

Tuition fees for overseas students may vary from those quoted.

Extra costs : GCSE examination fees £30 per exam, USB flash drive, A4 file, writing materials, file paper and books £50.
