Course programme

The Early Childhood Studies (ECS) degree programme, which focuses on young children aged 0-8 years and their families, provides a sound academic knowledge base for all careers in early years. This is a multi-disciplinary programme that prepares students for careers in education, health, social services, the private sector and/or the voluntary sector. In a rapidly changing field when early years stands firmly at the forefront of Government agenda, Early Childhood Studies degrees are considered as one of the progression routes to the Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) or careers in a range of early years professions. This is linked to the Government’s restructuring of early years policy and practice and the early years workforce, and the continued commitment to improving outcomes for all children. An EYTS pathway may be offered in addition to this degree, subject to continued funding of this pathway, and students may opt in during their studies. This highly successful programme offers full-time and part-time routes and includes the joint and combined honours degree that is based at Canterbury and the single honours programme that is based currently at Broadstairs, Medway and Canterbury. The programme will also be offered as part-time blended learning. This pathway may include some residential intensive sessions at the University.
