To promote an understanding of the inter-disciplinary approaches to the study of the young child. Suitable for students following on from level 3 diplomas in any area of nursery and young child care and education, for example a BTEC Early Years or CACHE Diploma. It is also suitable for anyone wishing to gain a qualification at degree level with a commitment to developing an understanding of the development of the young child and it provides a route to becoming a qualified Primary teacher by undertaking a one year PGCE course following graduation.

About this course

- 160 to 220 points, based upon a minimum of two A levels or equivalent. We welcome BTEC Diploma qualifications, CACHE Diploma or Access Programme passes.
- We welcome applications from students with ethnically diverse backgrounds, students returning to education and international students. We also support widening participation and encourage applicants with non-standard qualifications.

If English is a second language:
- IELTS Grade 6 or
- Cambridge CAE/CPE grade C or
- TOEFL 580 points (computer based test 235 or internet based 80)

BA (Hons) Early Years Education

Students explore ideas, theories, arguments and analysis using written, visual and oral media. Early Years Education embraces the whole range of academic thinking and research that leads to an understanding of the development and the construction of young children’s lives.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will have gained an initial qualification that equips them to work in areas such as community and social care settings with young children, educational welfare, nursery work and management, senior playworker/coordinator roles, playwork managers. Some careers may require a further post-graduate qualification.

The degree can also be used as a progression route into teaching via the Reception/Key Stage 1 or Primary PGCE courses (subject to interview and entry requirements). Fast track progression to Early Years professional Status (EYPS) may also be available.

Teaching/learning methods and strategies

Teaching is delivered through a variety of methods including lectures, seminars, workshops, group work, work placement, the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (BREO) and individual tutorials.

Assessment

Students will be expected to undertake a wide range of assessment strategies such as essays, case studies, group presentations, progress logs, seminar papers and exams.
