Eating disorders and eating distress present complex situations with important consequences for the mental and physical health of affected individuals. Nutrition Practitioners need to understand the definitions and diagnostic criteria for the main disorders, the potential underlying biochemical imbalances, the role and nature of nutritional support and guidelines and boundaries for safe and appropriate practice.

This one-day practical seminar (along with the recommended pre-reading) aims to improve your ability to work safely with individuals affected by an eating disorder/eating distress.

Who will teach?

Jane Nodder is an experienced nutrition practitioner and Course Director for the on-line MSc programmes in Oriental Medicine, Complementary Medicine and Advanced Nutrition (Research & Practice) at the Northern College of Acupuncture, York (University of Middlesex).

What level is this course?
  • This course provides CPD at Levels 6 and 7 (final year Undergraduate / Masters degree level). Although the presenter will briefly recap on key knowledge areas, this day focuses on turning knowledge into practice and improving critiquing abilities.
  • Practitioners are not expected to have trained to the above level to attend, but the course assumes some clinical experience and is therefore only suitable for nutrition students in their final year of training.

The pre-reading materials will cover the following key information relating to eating disorders and eating distress:

  • common disorders
  • similarities and differences between disorders
  • diagnostic criteria for the classical eating disorders
  • overview of aetiology, predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors for other eating disorders
  • lifestyle and behavioural factors
  • overview of conventional treatment approaches
How will I be taught?

The course will be delivered via a mix of pre-reading materials and face to face attendance. The seminar will be delivered in presentation format illustrated with case examples.

Space is limited to 48 participants. You will receive essential information, practical tips and resources to help you implement your learning in your practice.

Materials and pre-reading will be provided electronically two weeks before the course and given the pre-reading involved, bookings for this course will close at this time. In order to reduce our global footprint, hard copies of most materials will not be provided on the day, unless the material is particularly sensitive.

Delegates are welcome to bring the materials on electronic devices; print and bring the materials or take notes and refer to the electronic versions at a later date.
