Course Content: (Year 1) The Economic Problem: With unlimited wants and limited resources how does an economy decide what to produce? Markets and Market Failure: Demand and supply e.g. A government may intervene in the market mechanism for the benefit of society, such as reducing the demand for alcohol or increasing the supply of education The National Economy: Macroeconomics looks at the basic objectives of government policy such as sustainable economic growth, low inflation, low unemployment and a positive balance of payments (international trade) Assessment is by examination. Course Content: (Year 2) Business Economics: Analysis of the competitiveness of markets (from monopolies to perfect competition) Distribution of Income: How are income and wealth distributed within the economy? The National and International Economy: The performance of the UK economy. Globalisation with reference to the European Union, less developed countries, newly industrialised countries and the tiger economies Assessment is by examination using a range of techniques such as report writing and essay questions.
