About this course

You will need four GCSEs at grade C or above, which should include Maths and English. If you are a mature student without these qualifications we will discuss the situation with you and offer advice as to whether this is the right course for you. You do not have to have studied Economics or Business Studies before.

AS & A Level
About the Course
This course will appeal if you are ambitious and likely to enjoy keeping up with current affairs and seeking to understand the ins and outs of economics in the news. A variety of teaching methods will be used, from case studies and
theory, to analysis of newspaper articles and current affairs programmes.
AS Level
Unit 1: Markets and Market Failure looks into how prices for different products are determined and what happens if the normal price mechanism fails. You will also study how wealth is distributed and what the Government†s role is in all of this.
Unit 2: The National Economy analyses how economies work by looking at economic
issues such as inflation, unemployment, the EU and how an economy performs internationally.
A2 Level
Unit 3: Business Economics and the Distribution of Income analyses how firms
behave in terms of their competitiveness and survival. You will examine issues such as monopolies and pricing strategies. You will also look at the labour market and how it works.
Unit 4: The National and International Economy analyses how the national economy
is managed and how it trades with foreign countries. You will also look closely at the UK†s role in the EU.
This course complements Accounting, Business, Maths and IT.

What are the entry requirements?
How is the course assessed?
You will be assessed by two exams in each year.
AS level. There are two papers, each consisting of data response and multiple-choice questions.
A2 level. There are two papers, each consisting of a data response and an essay.
Fees
No Course Fees for Under 19's. Over 19's must pay, or claim Level 2 or Level 3 Entitlement for FREE courses .
