The subject is normally divided into microeconomics and macroeconomics, both of which involve debate on areas of current affairs.
Microeconomics looks at problems as they affect individuals and companies. What do we spend our money on? Why do firms advertise? What determines the price of petrol? Are students entitled to the Minimum Wage? Why are nurses and teachers so poorly paid?
Macroeconomics looks at the big economic issues facing the Government, such as whether it is in our interests to surrender the pound and adopt the euro. You will also study the Stock Market and the factors that influence its rise and fall.
ENTRY RECOMMENDATIONS:
Grade C in English and Mathematics and an interest in current affairs.
ASSESSMENT:
External exams.
PROGRESSION:
Economist, financial journalism, banking, stock market, accountancy, insurance.
