This course is offered as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. You will take 3 Higher Level subjects and 3 Standard Level subjects and complete components in Theory of Knowledge, Creativity Action Service and an Extended Essay.

Course overview

IB Higher and Standard Level Economics introduces you to the essential concepts and theory of micro- and macro-economics.

You will study the following topics:

Scarcity and Choice

Micro-economics, including market failure

Macro-economics, including economic growth, unemployment, inflation, and income distribution

International Economies, including international trade and exchange rates

Development Economics, including the problems faced by developing countries

You will always be encouraged to interpret this economic theory in the context of topical events and from the broad range of perspectives that exists within the global economy. This enquiring approach will help you to develop the ability to think as an economist.

How you will learn

You will learn through a variety of methods to support your understanding and learning style. These include, class discussion, individual work and study, exam-focused teaching, presentations, independent research, and a scheduled programme of assessment and revision to accelerate your learning.

How you will be assessed

External Assessment:

Paper 1: (20% Higher Level; 25% Standard Level)

The paper consists of four extended-response questions based on all five sections of the syllabus. You must attempt ONE question.

Paper 2: (20% Higher Level; 50% Standard Level)

A short-answer question paper based on all five sections of the syllabus. The paper consists of six questions (there is an additional question from any section of the syllabus). You must attempt THREE questions.

Paper 3: (40% Higher Level only)

A data-response paper that consists of five structured questions based on all five sections of the syllabus. Each question will focus on one section of the syllabus, but may require you to draw on knowledge and understanding from other sections. You must attempt THREE questions.

Internal Assessment:

(20% Higher Level; 25% Standard Level)

You will produce a portfolio of FOUR commentaries. Each commentary is 650-750 words, based on a news media extract, linking your economic theory to a real-world situation.
