Course overview BA (Hons) Education & Learning is an exciting new degree at the University of Bolton that combines aspects of current educational policy, the history of education, sociology, philosophy and psychology. It will allow you to explore key issues in education both in the UK and abroad. After completing this degree you will be able to progress to postgraduate study in education or related fields. While this course does not lead directly to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), you will have the opportunity to gain experience in schools or other educational establishments that will give you the edge if you choose to apply for teacher training courses including Primary teaching. About the course Teaching, learning and schooling shape lives and affect everyone in society. How do we learn? Why are experiences of education so varied? How do we promote equality in education and training? This course will explore these issues. Some key themes, central to the course, are critical and reflective thinking, equality and diversity. By thinking about how we learn, through our conscious and unconscious knowledge, you will consider formal, examined learning as well as the other knowledge that shapes our lives, our interests and our value structures. You will research and analyse different educational practices and reflect on your own and others’ experiences of education. What you will learn

This course is both theoretical and applied. You will have the opportunity to undertake a placement in a school or college and analyse learning and teaching from a variety of perspectives. You will develop skills in academic writing, research and critical thinking as well as study skills such as referencing, essay planning and analysing data. You will be supported in the development of essential skills such as teamwork, debate and presentation and will be required to demonstrate your abilities in organisation, time management and ICT. All are directly relevant to the education sector; all are transferable and highly valued by a range of graduate employers.

Skills in social research methodology and analysing data and text will enable you to develop an understanding of the political, cultural, economic and historical factors that shape education today. Learning is through a mix of formal sessions, tutorials, guided study and research. Assessment is through exams, case studies, essays, oral presentation and portfolios.

Additional information

Careers & professional development We expect that many of our graduates will progress into teaching, training and learning support. In particular, initial teacher training qualifications such as PGCE (Primary), leading to a career in primary school teaching, will be a popular progression route. You may also go on to complete postgraduate qualifications in areas such as librarianship or careers advice. Alternatively you may apply for graduate training schemes, such as those for local government.
