Year 1- What is education?
An introduction to key concepts in education studies contextualised within the disciplines of philosophy, sociology and history. - Study skills
This module equips you with the study skills you will need to study at HE level. - Constructing childhood
A focus on media portrayals of children and childhood, including notions of the 'othered' child, exclusion and stereotyping. - Community family and children
Building on themes introduced in the 'Constructing childhood' module, the focus will be on considerations of social capital, youth culture and transitions. - Language, literacy and learning
An exploration of the theories and practice around how children become effective readers, writers and users of language. This module will include a reading placement in a local school or early years setting. - Developing mathematical thinking
- Interpersonal interactions
An exploration of peer and family relationships, friendship, social capital and bullying. - Developing mathematical thinking
A theorised, developmental problem solving approach to understanding mathematical thinking and how learning in mathematics is supported. - Barriers to learning
Building on a range of previous modules the focus will be on identifying and reducing barriers for individual learners. - Equality, culture and citizenship
An exploration of the individual as a citizen within the context of social justice. - Alternative education setting placement
In this module you prepare for a placement in a non-main stream educational setting. This could be a special needs school, museum, prison, hospital school etc. The placement is for eight weeks and you'll develop practical skills and understanding whilst applying theory you have already been studying to an educational context. - An introduction to education technology
The use of technology in formal educational contexts has had a profound effect on the way teachers teach and students learn. In this module you'll learn about technologies used in formal learning contexts and how technologies can be used to support learning and assist educators.
- Contemporary issues in education
This module will deal with politically, economically and socially current issues in education. - Creativity in education
Reflections on curriculum will help you to understand how you and children develop creative approaches to learning. - Assessment in education
In this module you will consider how effective teaching and learning is supported by techniques in questioning and formative assessment. You will develop a political understanding of how class, school, national and international assessment is related to performance and curriculum policy making decisions. - Project
In the third year you will have the opportunity to design a study based in an educational setting which will help you understand a specific context and learn how theory is applied to practice. - Contextualising education globally
Building on the year one module 'What is Education?' you will explore and compare aspects of policy, practice and curriculum across the world and develop an understanding of global concerns.
