About this course
* 160 to 220 points, based upon a minimum of two A levels or equivalent. We welcome BTEC Diploma qualifications, CACHE Diploma or Access Programme passes.
* We welcome applications from students with ethnically diverse backgrounds, students returning to education and international students. We also support widening participation and encourage applicants with non-standard qualifications.
If English is a second language:
- IELTS Grade 6 or
- Cambridge CAE/CPE grade C or
- TOEFL 580 points (computer based test 235 or internet based 80)

BA (Hons) Education Studies

This programme offers a broad curriculum in the field of education. The units are taught by academic staff with extensive school teaching experience.
This multidisciplinary course is delivered by staff with expertise in sociology, psychology and other related social science areas. Students will also be encouraged to reflect on their own educational experiences as part of the course.
The first year of the programme provides a broad introduction to the study of education as well as focusing on key higher education skills in literacy, ICT, information gathering and communication.
Year one of the programme includes the following units of study
- Understanding education and schooling
- Multi-disciplinary perspectives
- The Young Child
- Social constructions of childhood
After successfully completing year one of the programme students follow four of five available strands within the second and third years of the degree.
These strands are
1. Early years education.
2. Inclusion and special needs education.
3. Skills, Careers and Research.
4. The child and the curriculum.
5. ICT and education.
In the final year the research theme is present in many modules but particularly focused in the dissertation.
Students intending to follow a career in teaching have the opportunity to gain vital school experience via the volunteer programme coordinated and supported by the University. There is also specialist advice from our experienced careers service staff.

Career Opportunities
This course provides the background needed for application to a primary PGCE. However, there are also many alternatives for graduates, for example in social services, educational welfare, community programmes, charities and postgraduate study.

Teaching/learning methods and strategies
The course is taught in lectures, workshops, tutorials and seminars. Each student has their own designated personal tutor, who they can turn to for individual academic advice and guidance.
Assessment
Student progress is assessed in a range of different ways, for example, essays, group and individual presentations, case studies, progress logs, exams and reports.
