Course programme
Research Methodologies
This module explores a range of research strategies and methods, preparing you to assess the value and significance of different approaches to data collection and analysis within your field of study. You’ll learn how to develop your own research design, and how to collect and analyse information in order to find out new things about a topic that you’re interested in. Coursework typically involves developing your own research proposal.
Major Study
This module allows you to pursue your particular interests and demonstrate the breadth of knowledge, understanding and strengths that you have developed during your degree studies. You’ll be supported through the design and implementation of a small scale piece of educational research into your chosen topic. This module is your opportunity to bring together everything you have learned in a study of your choosing and you'll typically be assessed via a dissertation.
Managing Resources in Educational Contexts
In this module you will explore the effective management of resources in educational contexts. When considering this area you will discuss the management of human resources, finance and funding and estate management with a particular emphasis on efficiency, data management and sustainability. You will develop your knowledge of theories, models and standard practices in resource management through an online test and report exploring your particular interests within the scope of the module.

Leadership and Management in Professional Contexts
This module seeks to develop your understanding of theories of leadership, management and the organisation of professional practice. You’ll have the opportunity to explore relevant theory and practical factors such as mentoring arrangements, group structures, staff development and the leadership of change in professional practice. Assessment typically involves the development of an annotated bibliography and a poster presentation.
Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND): Understanding policy and practice
You will study historical attitudes to disability including, for example, medical intervention from the early part of the 20th century and more recent social changes including the disability rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s, and a range of models of health and disability. You will critically evaluate appropriate policy and legislation and how this has influenced the development of appropriate provision and practice. You will explore how our understanding of SEND has developed, and the impact of this on our understanding of inclusion. You will investigate the needs arising from specific SEND conditions, and what this means for educational practice. This module will also support you in developing some of the professional knowledge and understanding required within the NCTL National Award for SEN Co-ordination, related to the following standards: 1. The statutory and regulatory context for SEN and disability equality and the implications for practice in your school or work setting 2. How SEN and disabilities affect pupils’ participation and learning 3. Strategies for improving outcomes for pupils with SEN and/or disabilities
Critical Education
This module seeks to explore the social, cultural, political and economic context of education. Assessment is typically via the development of a portfolio analysing the influences on education, a reflexive account of your own personal and professional development and an evaluation of a specific aspect of current educational practice.
