How did English poets respond to the spiritual, political and social upheaval that characterised this extraordinary entury? Among many others, we shall consider Donne’s anguish, Herbert’s devotion, Milton’s majesty, Rochester’s licentiousness and Dryden’s withering wit.

Course programme
Beginning with Shakespeare and Donne, we shall chart the spiritual and political concerns and conflicts of the
century’s early decades, culminating in Civil War. Subsequently we shall consider the significance of Milton’s
Paradise Lost, and the unbuttoned Restoration verse of the likes of Rochester, concluding with the vivid satirical wit
of Dryden. As well as charting the relationship between poetry and the times which gave rise to it, we shall study
the remarkable developments in poetic forms and conventions.
