"Entry Requirements This course is suitable for those who are due to complete / have completed an HND (NVQ level 5) in Public/Uniformed Service*. This course may also be suitable for those practitioners who have a range of professional/CPD qualifications (equivalent to NVQ level 4 and 5) and wish to present a portfolio of evidence of professional qualifications in order to be considered for entry to the top-up.

The Department of Geography, Environment and Disaster Management offers a number of successful direct entry final year top up programmes of which EDM is the latest addition. The course is designed for those who have completed the HND in public/uniformed services or those practitioners with a series of undergraduate level certificate or diploma equivalent qualifications who wish to ""top up"" for an honours degree.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The Programme consist of 3.5 mandatory/compulsory modules and a further 2 modules chosen from a list of 6 option modules shown below.

Full module list for full-time study

Mandatory modules

  • Concepts and Issues in Emergency Management
  • Research Assignment
  • Training & Exercising for Emergency Management
  • Employment Skills (half module)

Option Modules (any 3 from 6)

  • Comparative Research in Disaster Management (Field course module*)
  • Crisis Continuity and Disaster Aetiology
  • Community Resilience
  • Hazards, Disasters and GIS
  • English for GEDM (for those for whom English is not their first language)
  • A choice from the range of Add+Vantage modules (half modules).

* an additional charge may be made for optional international field courses.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and workshop practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will assist you in developing your study and research skills and review and discuss your progress with you via a series of academic personal tutor sessions. You will also be supported by our graduate recruitment tutor in order to develop your employment skills and maximise your graduate job hunting opportunities.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Your work will be assessed via coursework and examinations. The relative importance of these two components will vary between modules. There will be an appropriate split between coursework and examinations with some modules assessed by coursework only. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a piece of original research in your second semester.
