Course Description

This course is aimed at those whose careers involve caring for people at the end of their life. It is suitable for people working in a variety of settings, including hospitals, hospices, day provision, care or nursing homes and domiciliary care. It is also suitable for people who are already working in other care settings and are considering working in end of life care.

The course is divided into five units, each covering a different aspect of caring for those at the end of their lives.

The first unit establishes the underpinning knowledge of working around death and dying; by looking at different approaches that are present within society.

Unit Two aims to inform the learner of the best methods of managing pain and discomfort in end of life care. It includes suggestions of methods the carer can use to assist those affected, alongside ways the person receiving care can be supported to help themselves.

The third unit focuses on dementia as a life-limiting illness, outlining some of the issues dementia can present when caring for someone at the end of their life.

A specific focus on the role of the care worker at the time when death occurs is taken in the fourth unit. It covers the necessary actions to be undertaken to respect the person’s dignity, whilst upholding values held by their family and their cultural beliefs. This must all be carried out within the limits of the law and the care environment.

The final unit deals with loss and grief and how this can affect both the loved ones of the deceased and the care worker.
