Our one-year MSc in Energy and Power Engineering may interest you if you have a background in general engineering or science.
Qualified electrical engineers are desperately needed by the power industry. There is also a severe shortage of power engineering expertise in government bodies and finance organisations, for example, where a detailed knowledge of energy supply and demand is increasingly important as societies develop and adapt to pressing environmental and economic constraints, dwindling reserves of fossil fuels and the emergence of new energy technologies.

Course programme
Five core modules cover the fundamental aspects of modern power systems and energy conversion technologies, including renewable energy generation and energy storage.
- Electrical Machines and Drives
- Fuel Cells and Energy Storage
- Operation and Control of Power Systems
- Advanced Power Electronic Converters and Devices
- Renewable Energy
Three optional modules cover ‘non-electrical’ technologies that are crucial to the safe and reliable operation of modern power and energy systems such as heat transfer, signal and image processing, wireless communications, optical communications and systems modelling.
- ASICs, MEMS and Smart Devices
- Heat Transfer Theory and Design
- Optical Communication Systems
- Power Electronic Converters and Devices
- Signal & Image Processing
- Systems Modelling and Simulation
- Antenna, Propagation and Wireless Communication Theory
The degree comprises eight taught modules and a project.
The research project entails an in-depth experimental, theoretical or computational investigation into a topic of industrial significance chosen by you with guidance from your academic supervisor.
Assessment:
Modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and written examinations.
