The Course
The Diploma is a practical course designed for you if you have a broad interest and enthusiasm for Engineering. It covers all you need to know about engineering at the level you're studying. It will open up the ideas and concepts behind engineering, and how they impact on our world. You'll look at key engineering principles such as design, materials, electronic systems, maintenance and manufacturing. And think about what makes ideas succeed, from the first sketch to the finished product or system. The Diploma consists of three components:

The Additional/Specialist learning allows you to tailor your programme to your own interests and aspirations and it consists of accredited qualifications at the same level as, or one level above, the Diploma. The additional learning is intended to broaden the learning experience by including qualifications from other sectors and the specialist learning is intended to allow learners to specialise further in the sector by undertaking qualifications from the same sector as the Diploma.
The Additional/Specialist learning and Project work for the Engineering Diploma will take place in a variety of locations in conjunction with the programme partners.
HOW WILL I LEARN?
The equivalent of about three days a week is spent on the course. The College day is usually from 9am until 4.30pm.
There is a balanced programme of lectures, directed private study, laboratory practical work, assignments and industrial visits. Previous visits have included Southampton Boat Show and Honda. In addition to technical subjects, personal and interpersonal skills are developed and assessed as an integral part of the course as well as the three Key Skills, Information Communication Technology, Application of Number and Communication. Continuous assessment of performance is carried out by means of tests, class and laboratory work and assignments. All modules are formally assessed and final grades are subject to moderation by the course team and a representative from BTEC.
