Course programme

The course is Full-Time or Part-Time Course up to one year. You will be required to attend the college for 12 hours per week The exact length of the course depends on how quickly you are able to complete your portfolio.

Practical assignments and practical skills assessment in realistic working environments leading to a National Vocational Qualification in Electronic Engineering equipment servicing and general Engineering Maintenance.

Assessment is entirely by means of practical skills and competence testing using a set of realistic work assignments, at College or at work, building up into a portfolio of individual student's results and evidence. The majority of the competence evidence must come from your workplace although simulation, replication and support are available from College.

The units covered are:

  • Statutory Regulation Compliance
  • Use of Engineering Data and Documents in Maintenance
  • Efficient and Effective Working Practices
  • Testing Electronic Equipment
  • Fault Diagnostics on Electronic Equipment
  • Repairing Electronic equipment
  • Hand Over/Confirmation of Completion of Maintenance

A wide variety of fault diagnosis and rectification techniques will be developed using a range of sophisticated test equipment including analogue & digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, test-beds, simulators, computer databases, test pattern generators, wobbulators, signal generators, logic probes, logic analysers, storage scopes, transistor testers, portable appliance testers and diagnostic software.

Full credit (APL) may be given for existing skills and previous experience at work when suitable evidence is supplied by the Technician.

All seven units are required to qualify for the whole award. A certificate of unit credit may be awarded for fewer units completed. The final proof of competence in the portfolio must be assessed in a real work environment, either because the student has obtained employment or a part-time work placement.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is a continuous process of portfolio development and observed workplace competence. Evidence may be collected into your portfolio by a combination of the following:

* APL (accreditation of prior learning) evidence from previous work & employment
* Simulation exercises at College to provide underpinning knowledge and skills
* Replication of real work activities at College with real faulty equipment
* Real work activities on placement with companies providing experience
* Real work normal workplace activities (e.g. JOB SHEETS)

What progression opportunities are open to me?
You can progress onto the Engineering Maintenance NVQ3 which involves a placement in industry or possibly employment with your chosen placement company.
