About the subject

English Literature is an exciting subject which ought to appeal to anyone who likes
either stories
or words
or books
or language
(or all of these)
and who has a reasonably open mind. Over the course a minimum of eight books will be read (covering the genres of poetry, plays and novels - and also including Shakespeare). These texts will be read for enjoyment and then - because they're pretty substantial and can take it - subjected to a great deal of intensive questioning and analysis (to find out how good or bad they really are, how they're put together and whose side they're really on).

Learning Styles

Mainly, in English lessons, we talk about things. Teachers will lead the class into areas of debate relevant to the texts being studied, and will help students get to grips with some of the concepts which are used in the subject. However, our aim is to get each individual student to ask their own questions and come up with their own answers. Although it's true that there are no final "right" answers in this subject, it's equally true to say there are more or less interesting ones and through discussion, debate and essay-writing, we aim to make the business of reading as interesting for students as we can.

Subject combinations and progression

English combines traditionally with other Humanities subjects such as History and Media Studies, but it also goes well with Social Sciences, Languages - in fact any subject. Because English is such an open subject it leads on in many other directions - obviously journalism and the media but also publishing, business, teaching and academic life.
