Course programme

English Literature at degree level is a subject that develops your communication skills and fosters independent critical thinking. Anybody who likes to read, who feels curious about the questions that reading raises, and who values the opportunity to share with others the discoveries to which such questions lead, will find that the subject brings benefits and rewards extending far beyond graduation. All our lecturers are passionate about their specialisms and committed to supporting their students. The modules on offer travel down the ages, from the Anglo-Saxon era to contemporary writing, and look at what makes the literature of each period distinctive. Whatever options you choose, you will find yourself reading and responding to a range of absorbing and intriguing literary texts. The process of studying these will stimulate the exercise of informed critical judgement, the analysis and evaluation of evidence, and the practice of thinking, writing, and arguing with clarity, cogency, and precision. Students on this programme are also eligible to apply to study for a year in North America as part of their degree.
