College entry requirements apply. Students should have a grade B or above in GCSE English or English Literature and must enjoy reading and discussing literary texts.

English Literature
This academic subject aims to encourage students to develop their interest in and enjoyment of literature in order to become informed, independent readers and critics of texts. This will be achieved by a course of wide and close reading of texts from a variety of periods and genres. Consideration is given to varied interpretations of texts and to their contexts. Students must enjoy reading, research and engaging actively in classes in order to develop personal informed responses. This course is a natural choice for those who have studied GCSE English Literature.

The specification we follow is AQA Specification B

What Will I Learn on This Course?

You will learn:
  • To become a confident, thoughtful reader of a wide variety of texts
  • To express ideas and opinions clearly in written and spoken form
  • To appreciate a variety of texts from different centuries, styles of writing and genres
  • To consider different interpretations of texts
  • To develop an awareness of the contexts in which texts were produced
  • To make comparisons between books
  • To appreciate the significance of cultural and historical influences on readers and writers

Course Content and Method of Assessment

AS Level

Unit 1 Aspects of the Narrative: Two questions on 4 texts (2 novels post 1990 and 2 poetry 1800-1945) Open Book Examination 2 hours.

Unit 2 Dramatic Genres (Tragedy) Coursework: 2 pieces of written work, 1 on a Shakespeare play 1200-1500 words and 1 on another play 1200-1500.

A2 Level

Unit 3 Texts and Genres: Two questions on 2 texts based on Topic of Gothic. 1 text must be 1300-1800. One question will be text specific and one question will be comparative.

Unit 4 Further and Independent Reading (Coursework). 4 texts including 1 pre-released anthology of critical writing. Two pieces of written coursework. 1 piece comparing two texts 1500-2000 words. 1 piece applying critical comment to a text of the student's own choice. 1200-1500 words.

After the Course

English Literature is a long established, highly regarded A Level qualification, which prepares a student well for Higher Education or employment. It leads naturally to degree courses in English Literature or any English Studies Course. It is a good preparation for degree courses in Humanities or the Arts. Students will have developed a wide variety of transferable skills on the Course.

Subject Combinations

English Literature combines well with History, Classical Civilisation, Law, Philosophy, Music, Media and Film at A Level. Students who intend to study English Language or Literature at University should study this subject. It is ideal preparation for careers in Teaching, Law, Journalism as well as Arts and public service related careers and professions.
