Course programme
Course Overview
This course is for you if you have not achieved at GCSE level and wish to work towards gaining a vocational qualification and improve your literacy, numeracy, IT and employability skills.
You will have the chance to try out pathways in in Construction and Introduction to Vehicle Technology as one vocational taster per term.
Construction
You will learn to produce a three-dimensional timber product (for example tray, picture frame, mirror frame) and develop the skills needed to manufacture a product in timber and timber sheet materials. The first part of the course gives you the opportunity to practise cutting corner halving joints and in the second you will manufacture a frame using the same joints. The final part of the course will introduce you to the hand tools and materials used to decorate household goods and you will develop the practical skills needed to decorate household goods.
Vehicle Technology
You will learn the basics of servicing a light vehicle. You will also be introduced into fault finding and rectification, and be shown how to remove and replace parts associated with a “Fast-fit” centre. A portfolio will be developed showing witness statements of practical workshop activities, underpinning knowledge, and a single on-line exam result.
You will learn by applying your skills by working in small groups, making presentations, completing written assignments and practical tasks.
You will have a personal tutor who will help you be successful and make sure you are prepared for your next steps in learning.
You will also improve the skills you need to either get a job or improve the skills you already have such as working in a team, communication skills and researching different careers.
Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.
