To teach the basic skill requirements and associated job safety knowledge to operators of Front Shovel Loaders including articulated types and Skid Steer Loaders, (Bobcats). Where required, to provide specific job training in both related job safety knowledge and practical skill applications for these types of machines. Suitable for: Wheeled Front Shovel or Skid Steer Loader operator trainees

About this course

Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator.
Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used.
Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions.
Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions.
Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements.
Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for skid steer loader use.
Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area.
Prepare the skid steer loader for use, operate machinery safely and efficiently.
Environmental considerations.
Storage and transport of implements and attachments
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation.
Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Operators of the skid steer within the workplace

Site must have access to the equipment and be able to provide an in date LOLER ticket for the machine.
Classroom / indoor space required for theoretical teaching element,

Course programme

Learn how to safely and efficiently operate a front shovel and skid steer loader.

On completion of the course you will understand the statutory requirements and the need for safety training. The course covers rated capacities for stability and instability, operating and site safety codes, machine and control familiarisation, daily checks, refueling and simple maintenance, procedures for steering, manoeuvring, load handling, traveling on site, leveling, digging, cleaning up, also vehicle loading and unloading and much more.

Course Duration:

Either 3, 2 or 1 day depending on candidates experience and type of machine & application – maximum 3 x candidates per course for basic training (6 if assessment test only).

Course Content:

Classroom based theory training to inform candidates of the relevant legislation / statutory requirements (HASWA 1974, PUWER 98, LOLER 98 etc), raise awareness of site safety and develop understanding of the vehicles engineering / stability principles including lifting capacities and de-rating required depending on circumstances / application. Practical Demonstration on thorough pre-operational checks prior to putting vehicle into use.
Supervised practical exercises to develop skills in manoeuvring both forwards & reverse over varying terrain including slopes, with & without loads / around obstacles. Loading applicable dumper / tipper lorry with spoil. Supervised practice at building spoil heap on firm level ground. Backfilling excavations leaving area clean & compacted.

Course Certification:

On successful completion of a theory test consisting of both open and multiple choice questions, and practical assessment using a progressive assessment report, successful candidates will receive a Certificate of Training in Basic Practical Skill and Ability.
