This is the first half of a year long course which will help you develop the English you need to participate actively in UK life both at home, in the street, with friends and at work. You will develop your English language skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening but focus more on speaking and listening ready to take an English Speaking Board Level 1 exam in February. Throughout the course you will develop your fluency in conversations about everyday topics and interpersonal issues. You will practise how to exchange opinions, ask and answer questions on a range of topics such as the news, current affairs, music, sports etc. You will work on how to prepare and give presentations on a range of topics with a clear unified structure and effective introduction and conclusion. Your ability to understand details and respond appropriately to a variety of conversations and recordings e.g. radio programmes will improve. And there will be a focus on a range of tenses especially perfect forms both simple and continuous. You will also develop your use of the passive. You will read a variety of texts and practise understanding general meaning and extracting relevant information e.g. to research your presentation. You will develop your writing skills to be able to make notes and give your opinion on important topics as well as write letters and emails for work and to friends.

About this course

• link words and stress the right syllable more accurately
• exchange opinions and ask and answering questions on a range of topics such as the news, current affairs, music, sports etc. with good pronunciation of auxiliaries
• prepare and give presentations on a range of topics with a clear unified structure and effective introduction and conclusion
• understand the details and respond appropriately to a variety of conversations and recordings e.g. radio and TV programmes
• use a range of tenses especially perfect forms both simple and continuous
• identify and use the passive voice accurately
• identify the general meaning of different types of texts and extract relevant information from them e.g. to research your presentation
• make notes and write your opinion on a number of important topics
• write letters and emails for work and to friends with a high degree of accuracy and appropriate vocabulary

By the end of this course you will also have improved your digital skills through use of Google Classroom, the internet and Microsoft Word/PowerPoint or Google docs.

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

This will be an exciting and interesting course with lots of practice. You will work in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole group. Your tutor will also work with you individually. There will be speaking and listening, reading, writing activities and games as well as the use of YouTube, an interactive whiteboard and computers to help your learning. Everything that you learn will help you in your daily life. You will need to do homework every week and use Google Classroom outside the class.

Course programme

You will practise reading, writing and speaking and listening but you will focus more on speaking and listening in order to prepare for the exam. Each class will focus on a certain topic such as the news, current affairs, music, sports, employment, or cultural values. You will focus on:

• speaking more fluently in conversations about everyday topics and interpersonal issues by learning how to link your words and stress the right syllable
• exchanging opinions and asking and answering questions on a range of topics such as the news, current affairs, music, sports etc.
• preparing and giving presentations on a range of topics with a clear unified structure and effective introduction and conclusion
• understanding details and responding appropriately to a variety of conversations and recordings e.g. radio programmes
• using a range of tenses especially perfect forms both simple and continuous
• developing your use of the passive voice
• understanding the general meaning of different types of texts and extracting relevant information e.g. to research your presentation
• making notes and writing your opinion on important topics
• writing letters and emails for work and to friends.

Additional information

There are many courses you could do next. You can continue to the second part of Level 1 to focus on your reading and writing. You can also do a number of courses without exams at the same time as this course or after it.
