This course will enable you to improve your English and your basic photography. You will use your enjoyment of taking photos to help you develop your English. You will learn how to take a good digital photograph, describe this process and make judgements about the quality of a picture. In doing this, your English will improve. You will practise how to talk to someone when taking their photo. You will develop your general English so you can describe photographs of people, objects and places in detail and so improve your use of adjectives and other vocabulary. You will learn how to give an opinion, make judgements and recommendations in the right language in both speaking and writing. By the end of the course, you will be able to create a small portfolio or exhibition of your work with interesting and engaging description or explanations of the photographs.

About this course

• identify and use key functions to take a good digital photo on your phone, tablet or digital camera• identify some important principles of a good photograph – for example, how to frame your photo, what to include, what to exclude• describe how to take an interesting and engaging photograph• use the right language with the right pronunciation to persuade someone you are photographing to do what you want them to do – for example, Why don’t you...? Could you...? Would you mind....? Perhaps, you could...• use a wide range of language to describe photos of people, places and objects• use a wide range of language for giving your opinion with right tone and pronunciation• recommend how to improve a photo in a polite and supportive way – for example, by using modals and questions• talk and write about your photos for an audience of listeners and readers.By the end of this course you will have developed your English vocabulary so you can describe, explain, give your opinion and make judgements and recommendations on photographs. You will also have improved your digital skills.

There are no additional costs but you will need to bring your own smartphone or tablet or digital camera. If this is impossible for you, City Lit will provide one for you.

This is an Entry 3-Level 1 course. You should be able to communicate in English in your daily life and understand general everyday conversations. The course is aimed at ESOL learners who want to learn more creative language in both speaking and writing. You should be able to use a camera on a smartphone, tablet or a basic digital camera and want to use these skills to improve your English language.

There are many courses you could do next. You could join one our general ESOL courses with an exam either E3 or L1. Or, you could join a course without an exam – for example, Conversation and Pronunciation (E3), Conversation in Practice (L1-L2), Matters of Opinion: Vocabulary in Practice (L1), ESOL and Film (L1-L2), ESOL and Making Podcasts (L1-L2). We also have many grammar courses you could join. You could also join a mainstream digital photography course at City Lit. Your tutor will advise you on the best course.
