The majority of our courses are designed so that you will gain the skills and confidence required to enable you to join WYPW as a member, and use the facilities on an open-access basis. You can then carry on practising the techniques you have learned, and develop your skills further, with technical support available if needed. Suitable for: All - no previous experience necessary, beginners welcome but also a great refresher course.

Course Leader

Kathryn studied Fine Art at Kingston Univeristy in Surrey, and completed an artist residency at Intaglio Printmaker in London, before moving to Leeds to become a practicing artist and Technician at West Yorkshire Print Workshop.

Course programme

This course will cover all the basics of hard and soft ground etching using copper plates and etching with ferric chloride, a less toxic alternative to the traditional nitric acid, and is a great course for beginners and those who need a refresher. You will learn how to prepare, etch and print a metal plate, with a hands-on approach, as well as inking and registration techniques. Kathryn Desforges is a practising artist who specialises in printmaking, and is also technician at WYPW.
