Course programme

Course content

This course will establish a basic knowledge of the fundamentals in monotype, intaglio (etching, drypoint, collograph, chine colle), relief (Lino) and silkscreen printmaking techniques.

The aim is for beginners to acquire a general appreciation and awareness of techniques so that they can apply their knowledge in any number of ways at a future point. Students are often amazed by the variety of prints they produce, as each process has its own distinct appearance and surface quality. Some processes are very labour intensive, while others are much more spontaneous.

Level one students do not need to have any previous experience, though it is not uncommon for people to attend who have a practical background in the arts. Everyone is welcome.

Course structure

When starting the course, you will be introduced to each technique over a two week period. You will be given direction by the tutor but are encouraged to bring along source material of you own to work from.

After completing the introductory stage, you have the choice of going over the techniques again and in so doing become a much more adept and confident all round printmaker. Alternatively you may wish to investigate one particular process in more depth, and so take the first tentative steps towards specialization. This heavily supervised teaching environment should be enjoyed until both students and staff feel that a good level of competency has been reached.
Advanced students should first have attended Printmaking Level One at Leeds College of Art. This class may well be pushing the boundaries of printmaking practice! Expect prints to be made using a combination of techniques, including Photo-etching and Type Setting, and to work alongside others ready and motivated to direct their own course of investigation. The emphasis is on individual expression and experimentation.

Teaching

The processes are taught by example in small groups and on an individual
basis, by an experienced printmaking tutor with support from several
expert technicians.

Equipment and materials costs

Introductory materials are included in the course fees but you will have to pay for film and paper after the first introductory sessions; these can be purchased from the College at cost price.
