To paint experimentally requires a degree of free-thinking as well as some technical understanding. Through guided exercises you will develop increased technical skills using an exciting range of paint/print media, and contrasting supports. Willingness to experiment is essential, but we will also discuss the emergent image or surface, including ways of integrating techniques and discoveries into your painting process.
The main outcomes of this course will be experimental test-pieces, a research journal with samples, and a final personal project incorporating aspects of your research.

About this course
Develop a clear understanding of ways that acrylic and oil (or resin-based media) may be used in combination
-Use silk-screen and stencil techniques to incorporate photo/graphic imagery into the painting process.
-Use medium additives to develop surface texture, aid transfer or dispersal of pigment, maintain luminosity
-Build a tool-kit of experimental marks, swatches and techniques for personal use and future development.
-Complete a finished project-piece selectively applying one or two techniques of your choosing.
-Build confidence discussing processes, techniques and materials.
An A3 or A4 soft-back cartridge sketchbook from Cass Art (approx £3) is recommended but not essential. Materials will be provided to make small individual test pieces in the range of techniques described above. You may choose to purchase your own supply of specific materials or supports to explore a particular technique more fully or at larger scale..
If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, City Lit students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK’s leading art supplies retailer. Your tutor will advise you on what you should buy
You will learn through tutored discussion, demonstration, practical guided exercises, individual experimentation, peer discussion and group review. There will be accompanying slides, books and samples.
