Overview
Our Extended Medical Degree course MBBS (EMDP) is specifically designed for students who are studying A-levels or Access to Medicine at a non selective state school in the UK or who are participants of Realising Opportunities across England. The course offers a more graduated introduction to medical study than the standard MBBS degree and provides greater academic and pastoral support.

Year 1

Year 1 Required Modules

The following Stage 1 modules are studied during years 1 & 2:

In addition, and in order to support the core medical curriculum, we require you to complete EMDP-specific tutorials and formative assignments, which currently include the following subject areas:
• Chemistry
• Numeracy
• Pharmacology
• Anatomy
• Academic writing
• Science communication
• Enquiry-based learning

  • From Science to Clinical Practice 1
  • From Science to Clinical Practice 2
  • Longitudinal placements
  • Doctor as teacher

You also have the opportunity to explore other subjects of your choice in greater detail which take the form of the following:

  • Student selected components (SSCs): SSCs are projects and short courses in medical, scientific and non-medical subjects that you choose according to personal interest.
  • Scholarly projects: You will undertake a scholarly project in an area of interest selected from across the multi-faculty university.

The Intercalated BSc must be taken between Stages 2 and 3. This is available to EMDP(A101) students but they may choose to opt out.
