Course programme

Why do an extended project course at BHASVIC?
This is a one year level three course for second or final year students. It is a flexible qualification which can be incorporated into three of our programmes of study:

* Within a Diploma programme (see separate leaflets for Diploma courses)
* Within the AQA Baccalaureate (see AQA Baccalaureate leaflet)
* Alongside the core A2 or other level 3 courses.

The Extended Project is worth up to 70 UCAS points for an A* - equivalent to the second year of an A level.

BHASVIC is leading the way with Extended Projects
We were a pilot centre for the Extended Project in Perspectives on Science and in 2009, 35% of our students were awarded the new A* grade. Our courses in Global Perspectives, Perspectives on Science, Social Science Research and Geography research are unique to BHASVIC. We offer a very high level of student support and flexible teaching in order to nurture independent learning.

The Extended Project is prized by top universities
Universities really value the extended project as an addition to the three core A levels, as it helps them to select students with a commitment to their chosen specialist area and a head-start in the independent learning skills that higher education demands. It is modelled on university-style learning and is tailored to support and challenge students at sixth form level. You have the freedom to choose your own topic of study. You will work under supervision to complete an independent research study, assessed through dissertation and presentation to an audience. You will finish the course with an excellent grounding in research, critical analysis, extended writing and presentation skills.

How will I be taught?
There are four lessons per week for all except the Geography project which is taught alongside Geography A2, so has two lessons. Courses begin after the AS exams in June with a grounding in practical research and critical thinking skills, and you will be supported in choosing a topic. In the autumn term, lessons involve research, presentations, discussion and debates and the development of the skills you will need for your own project. You will write a research proposal in October. After this, you will focus on writing your dissertation. You will present your 'work in progress' for feedback and join discussions in the classroom and in online forums. Teachers give individual support in class and via online discussion.

How will my work be assessed?
You will submit a 5,000 to 6,000 word dissertation or investigation report in an appropriate format, a project proposal and a log of the research process for assessment. You will also present your research to the assessors and peers and answer their questions. There is no written examination.

Will the workload be manageable?
It's comparable to any other AS course, but you'll need to manage your own workload. You'll be free to focus on your exam courses by May.

Which extended project course is right for me?
Global Perspectives
This course is very popular with social science and humanities students, particularly those wishing to develop an understanding of our increasingly interconnected and rapidly changing world. Our lives are affected by forces or decisions which seemingly we cannot control. The global financial crash, climate change, 9/11 and Iraq/Afghanistan wars, migration, the impact of 'free' trade, the gap between the world's rich and poor are just a few examples of the most pressing issues in the world today where we need to gain a global perspective.

Perspectives on Science
This course is very popular with science and social science students, particularly those intending to apply to study medicine or life sciences; and with humanities students who are interested in ethics and philosophy. In a world of astonishing technological advances, issues such as stem cell and cloning research, euthanasia, weapons technology, climate change and social responsibility present fundamental dilemmas about what it is to be human, about our responsibilities to others and about how to achieve the best outcome for individuals and society.

Social Science Research
This is a practical course for students who have studied Sociological or Psychological research at AS. It is popular with students who are intending to study a related subject at university, as it develops a high level of primary research and analysis skills. The depth and scope of study is far greater than A level courses allow, with the freedom to investigate any research question within the social sciences. Topics studied this year include: the reliability of eye-witness testimony, generational changes in feminism and media influences on body image.

What have students said about projects?

A great new way to learn, more free
The class atmosphere is great, you get to know everyone really quickly and that makes the class discussions easier and enjoyable.
It taught me to do research independently, write a good dissertation and make a good presentation... a head start for university

I'm really glad I did Perspectives on Science, I'd recommend it to anyone, as long as they're prepared to put the work in.
