Costs and equipment 16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. Students aged over 19 on the start date of their studies, have to pay tuition fees. Some students may be eligible for a fee concession, although in most cases some element of the fees will have to be paid. You may be entitled to a reduction if you are eligible for financial support. Course programme

The City & Guilds level 3 Engineering (Fabrication and Welding) is a unitised programme of study that is predominately practical based with a high level of workshop time, the classroom activity is all directly related to the practical aspects of the course and designed to give you the required knowledge and skills to work as a Fabricator/Welder.

City & Guilds require the learner to study and complete assessments in the following areas in order to complete the course.

4 Mandatory units:

301: Engineering Health and Safety
This unit covers the need to recognise and use safe working practices, in addition to the details of key legislation and how to carry out risk assessments.

302: Principles of Engineering
This unit covers the mathematics and science that is used in practical engineering calculations and also materials science in terms of selection of types, common forms of supply, properties and methods of changing their properties.

305: Principles if Fabrication and Welding
This unit covers the principles of welding, fabrication materials, weld symbols and terminology, distortion, weld defects, heat affects of welding, forming allowances and non-destructive and destructive workshop testing.


314: Fabricating Sheet Metalwork
This unit covers the practical and technical aspects of working with sheet metal, and covers the marking out, cutting, forming and joining techniques that are used to produce complex Sheet Metal fabrications.

In addition to these unites the learner must also complete 2 further units from the options below.

310: Manual Metal Arc Welding of Materials
This unit covers the practical and technical aspects of producing welded joints to a high standard in complex positions and configurations using the manual metal arc welding process

311: MIG Welding of Materials
This unit covers the practical and technical aspects of producing welded joints to a high standard in different positions and configurations using the metal arc gas shielded welding process

312: TIG Welding of Materials
This unit covers the practical and technical aspects of producing welded joints to a high standard in different materials, positions and configurations using the Tungsten Arc Gas Shielded Welding process

316: Patten Development for Fabrication
This unit develops the skills and the underlying process technology requires for obtaining flat layouts of 3D forms that can be used for producing templates and to mark out the material for fabrication to the required form. It includes the radial line parallel line and triangulation methods of development.
