About this Course (This course is validated by the University of Brighton and delivered by Northbrook College)UCAS code:W221 Fees and Finance Lecturer: Alan Baker - multi-award winning illustrator (see profile) The FdA Illustration course provides an intensively creative experience which develops studentsâ individual styles through a wide range of workshops, seminars and briefs. Students are encouraged to work in traditional and innovative forms and techniques, alongside the latest digital programs, preparing them for careers in the contemporary environment of illustration. The first year engages students with gaining skills in a range of techniques alongside generating concepts, ideas and the understanding of the creative process. It aims to marry the subject specific nature of the discipline together with a relevant overview of contemporary issues and practice within art and new media. The focus of the second year moves, through the application of skills, to developing market awareness and the abilities necessary for the freelance workplace. Assignments are initiated through a range of professional partners, developing work to professional standards. Industry briefs make up the central content of the portfolio which, alongside employability workshops and web presence, enable students to build a professional platform. Graduating students have in recent years exhibited at New Designers in London. Students have won national prizes including the Macmillan Children's Book Illustration awards. The FdA Illustration course provides an intensively creative experience which develops studentsâ individual styles through a wide range of workshops, seminars and briefs. Minor Project â semester-long assignment
Year 2
Professional Practice Briefs â A series of professional illustration projects, including competition briefs and projects set by visiting professionals.
Professional and Business Practice â visiting practitioners, business studies and work experience or industry research
Final Major Project â produce an in-depth body of portfolio work
Cultural and Supporting Studies â a critical study of an aspect of practice
