Course programme

Every learner at Central Sussex College who is under 19 will undertake a personal Study Programme designed to develop them academically, practically and personally. Study Programmes contain 3 essential elements:

Subject Course – Vocational or chosen Academic subjects, usually studied for 12 – 16 hours a week.

English and Maths – Every learner will work towards Level 2 English and Maths (C grade equivalent). Learners who have achieved a Grade C will extend their English and Maths.

3E – Our own brand of specific entrepreneurship, enterprise and employability training.

You will have specific time in your timetable for each of the three elements above and you will be expected to attend all elements throughout the year. Study programmes are designed to help you meet your maximum potential and progress to the next level of study of into work.

On this Art based experimental Graphic course you will produce and develop both images and text. It will cover Typography, illustration, package design, printmaking, photography and image manipulation using ‘Adobe PhotoShop’ and ‘InDesign’.

Year One

Practical work will start with idea development, direct observation and experimentation with new and contemporary image making materials and processes both on the computer and by hand.

Exhibition visits and exploring twentieth century Graphic Designers ways of working will be a major part of the course. Projects might cover themes such as promotional campaigns and advertising for different types of products using illustration and photography, CD covers and poster designs for the music business, and using letters as form to build abstract type structures. Contemporary Illustrators and commercial photographer’s work will be discussed and analysed as to its appropriateness for different project briefs.

Year Two

Students have far more scope to explore individual theme and ideas. Students select an area of study which they develop through practical experimentation and critical investigation. The coursework elements of Unit 3 allow students to progress project ideas in a sustained way through a number of processes and materials. Students will establish a clear client brief to show an understanding of commercial application and the needs of target audience. Contextual work will study elements of the history of design as well as contemporary practice (including museums, visits and field work exploring retail environments). The Unit 4 Externally Set Assignment allow students to respond the theme set by the exam board whilst building on the achievements of the previous Units.
