Julian of Norwich is the earliest woman we know if who wrote in English. She had a miraculous recovery from an almost fatal illness and told of the miraculous visions or “shewings” of Christ that she experienced. Margery Kempe is a fascinating, complex character who roused suspicion, fear and bewilderment among her fellow people, and wrote what might be the earliest autobiography in the English language. The writing of these women, and others, will be considered.
