Most common FEPA modules:
• PA1 Safe Handling of Chemicals
• PA2 Tractor or ATV mounted including weed wiper
• PA4 Granular application e.g. slug pellets
• PA6 Knapsack User
• PA11 Seed dressing
Candidates must also have NPTC assessment in the above if they come within any of the following categories:
1. The candidate was born after December 31 1964
2. They supervise anyone born after that date
3. They use chemicals on anyone else's land even if they are not paid
4. They work as a contractor
It is, however, advised that all sprayer operators undertake the assessment
PA1 - The basic module for all candidates. It is advised that this session is attended before the practical sessions. It is classroom based and covers:
• What pesticides are and their modes of action
• Interpretation of label information
• Record keeping
• Legislation relevant to pesticides application
• Protection of operators and the environment
• Storage and transport of pesticides
• Safe disposal of pesticides and containers
PA2 - A practical course working with the machinery used to facilitate the application of the pesticide.
• Vehicles involved will include trailed and self-propelled boom sprayers, including airtec, All Terrain Vehicles* (ATV) with sprayer attachment.
• The correct dilution and spraying techniques
• Cleaning and maintenance of equipment and safe disposal of unused chemicals
• Procedures to be followed to protect the public during spraying and the control of drift
PA4 - Practical application of granules, such as slug pellets through a wheel driven vehicle.
PA6 - Practical use of a knapsack sprayer to apply chemicals. Particularly common for work around farm buildings and in horticultural businesses.
PA11 - Seed dressing.
Other categories may be available according to demand.
• Candidates using an ATV should be adequately trained in the use of this vehicle before attending the course.
After training:
Candidates must apply to the National Proficiency Test Council to take the Assessments.
These assessments can be arranged to be taken on your own machines at your place of work.
