This course is suitable for beginners but is also an opportunity for those with some experience of the subject to really get their teeth into a sustained painting or series of works. This may also be suitable for painters of other subjects to direct their attention towards the figure. Drawing and figurative art are particular passions of the tutor's- many of his solo shows have been of drawing, he is an award-winning portrait sculptor who also paints from the figure with oils.

This masterclass includes lunches, refreshments and some materials. Basic oil and acrylic paints are provided, along with drawing media and paper. Canvasses and professional paint can be provided at additional cost, or brought with you.

Jamie Frost

Full time figurative artist and course tutor and visiting lecturer.

Jamie has been teaching privately for over ten years from his studio in West Yorkshire, and organises and leads a residential art holiday on a Beautiful estate in Tuscany. Prior to this Jamie taught in schools and special schools for eight years. His specialism is figurative fine art and portraiture. Trained as a sculptor but also a prolific draughtsman and painter, Jamie's work can be seen at www.jamiefrost.com.

Course programme

The class structure includes an introduction to a range of figurative art approaches, working from both male and female models.We will explore the language of drawing and painting- line, tone, texture and other formal elements using a range of media and a variety of long and short poses.We'll also discuss colour theory and look at how you apply paint to the figurative subject matter.
There will be a variety of pose duration in the first day, offering an opportunity to explore longer drawing methods (eg: measuring) and compositional issues. Whilst there will be lots of exploration of technique and the discipline of figure drawing, there will also be exercises and discussion of the expressive power of figurative work.
There will be a sustained study of two days at the end of the course. This is one pose with one model and any furniture/props agreed by the group.
